Becoming a dance teacher is an important decision. If you're considering it, it might be helpful to find out what our students think. Could one of our Teaching Qualifications help you reach your goals?
Here is what our former student Edd Mitton had to say.
"The bbodance Level 6 Extended Diploma in Dance Teaching appealed to me because, unlike a lot of other dance teaching courses, it gave me the option to focus on the genre and age group I'm interested in. I was already teaching contemporary dance at a vocational institute and wanted to gain insight into my teaching practice, as well as a qualification to open up further teaching opportunities.
The most noticeable development is I've gained a lot of confidence in my teaching. I have a better understanding of my individual approach and am confident that my teaching methods are underpinned by educational theory. In learning to shift my focus away from myself and onto the needs of my students, I feel my teaching has gained more clarity and, perhaps surprisingly, more freedom.
Many modules were really useful. I learnt so much from watching other teachers during the 40 hours of observation at the start of the course; it has hugely informed my practice. Also, whilst it was hard work, designing schemes of work and detailed lesson plans was very useful in clarifying my approach and ideas, and I would now feel confident to apply for teaching jobs in new organisations or even design a new course or programme. The advice I received from my tutors was always generous and helpful, and I really liked the viva voce structure for receiving feedback on practical classes.
Since completing the course I have already started to broaden my teaching portfolio. I have taken work in new organisations and new contexts, and am looking into applying for fellowship of the Higher Education Academy."
We hope Edd's feedback helps you on your dance journey!
