At the start of Dance Days 2018,
we are delighted to announce the launch of the Contemporary Dance Syllabus, an extension to the Musical Theatre Syllabus, and a release of the revitalised Grade 6 Classical Ballet Syllabus.

These continue our ambitious journey to review and expand on the range of dance genres we offer. We started on this journey two years ago in order to ensure that all bbodance syllabi reflect our high standards as an organisation, increase the range of genres we offer our Registered Teachers and Associate Members, and best respond to the demands placed on us as a leading dance awarding body in the United Kingdom and abroad.

“Support for the new Musical Theatre Syllabus has been fantastic,” stated bbodance CEO Robin Bloor. “A significant number of teachers, well above expectation, have thus far opted to be trained, and feedback from our frequent Regional Meetings shows many are planning to or have already incorporated this syllabus in their teaching schedule and held exams; as a result, several new schools have inquired to join bbodance. In fact, today’s launch of a new Contemporary Syllabus comes in response to requests we have received. We’re extremely confident this will further enhance the reputation and awareness of bbodance,” Robin concluded.

The syllabus expansion process utilises the expertise of bbodance Teaching Members, and, where appropriate, external endorsement. At the end of this process, all materials will undergo periodic review and controlled revision by a bbodance expert committee established solely for this purpose.

The current and authorised syllabus films and written syllabi will always be available for members to watch or download for free in the Members' Area. We hope you enjoy learning our new syllabi.

What the experts say

"The Grade 6 Classical BalletGrade 6 Classical Ballet is just lovely and in the same vein as the Field/Heaton work that everyone is so fond of."

—Janet Lupino, former bbodance Chief Examiner

"Currently in the UK there are only two other Musical Theatre courses that can compare to our new syllabus; both of these are short courses mainly focused on singing. bbodance's new Grade 3 Musical Theatre Syllabus is the only comprehensive syllabus of its kind that covers dance and singing. The syllabus goes from Primary and will go to Advanced 2 and has been specifically designed to prepare students for careers in the West End, introducing them to choreographers and musicals relevant to their age groups. We're confident that this well-rounded approach will create strong Musical Theatre dancers and are incredibly proud of our new syllabus."

—Julie Bowers, bbodance Head of Communications and Membership

“Excitingly, our new Contemporary Dance Syllabus will be the only Ofqual-recognised syllabus that fulfils the learning objective of mainstream Primary and Secondary Education.”

—Sam Lebihan, Head of the bbodance Teaching Qualifications (TQ) programme
